James has a tough-guy exterior, but anyone who really knows him knows he’s a softie,” Leah Tutman, who acted alongside James in his local Santa Cruz, Calif., theater company Kids on Broadway, tells Star. “And he was actually my first kiss! He gave me a quick kiss backstage during Beauty and the Beast [in 2006], and I was thrilled. I remember squealing and running away while he smiled and laughed.”
Being on American Idol was always a dream for James, who suffers from both Tourette syndrome and Asperger’s. Leah says he first talked about auditioning for the show in 2008 in the hopes of making money to help support his single mom (his father died of a drug overdose when James was 9). Three years later, the dream is now a reality for James, 21, who is struggling to raise a baby of his own.
“His talent is incredible,” gushes Leah. “He has the most amazing voice. It’s clear the second he opens his mouth. I knew he’d go somewhere!”
